La Isla

New waves in La Isla. La Isla, the Key Biscayne's only Spanish newspaper. La Isla has made radical changes, striving to fulfill the community needs. New owners are implementing a new style, in order to integrate the multicultural readers of Key Biscayne.

Last June, Publisher Gustavo Maurizio and Editor Alexandra Rossi, became the new owners/editors of the newspaper; Since then a seasoned team of journalists have joined them.

Besides its new format and logo, La Isla has improved its editorial content, and new sections have been added. More color pages and pictures along with in-depth articles. The idea is to bring information to the readers about different interesting topics. New sections include: "Innovations", featuring business and technology news; "Health and fitness", with news about medicine, health and beauty; "Current events", with latest general news; "New generation", showing the activities of the children of Key Biscayne; "Gourmet", about food, recipes and wine; "Community", about what's going on in Key Biscayne; "Sports", among others.

Additionally, the English section has grown up! "La Isla at a glance" is a two-page spread with a brief version of the editorial content. The newspaper is planning to add more English pages in order to give a more complete version of the content for the English-speaking readers.

La Isla is willing to integrate and bring together Latinos, Americans, and Europeans living in Key Biscayne, in order to strengthen the ties of the community. Being this a small village, integration is key among the residents.

The Islander News is sponsoring a voter registration/turnout drive for the 2004 Presidential and Village Council elections. Islander Art Director Jaime Millan created a logo "The Key Vote" to use in the campaign. Millan, along with Islander graphic artist Mirna Centeno, also created posters and flyers for the project.

"We are going to each store on the Key and offering them a poster to put in their window," said Islander Editor and Publisher Nancye Ray. "We are not advocating any political party or candidate, we just want people to register and vote on November 2."

Any business that did not receive a poster should call us.

"Our goal is that Key Biscayne have the highest voter turnout in the county, the state and the nation on November 2," said Ray.

The Islander also has developed flyers that will go home with every school child and is contacting clubs and churches to encourage them to let members know how to register. Voter registration forms in English and Spanish are available at the Village of Key Biscayne web site at keybiscayne.fl.gov/elections.asp; the Village Clerk's office; Key Biscayne Branch Library and The Islander News.

Residents can register to vote in the November 2 election until Monday, October 18.
