In the Beginning of February, look out for the Key Biscayne Magazine’s February Art Edition:

“Art is the last thing you buy,” an art dealer once told me. He was right, in the hierarchy of food, shelter and clothing art may come last. It is totally unnecessary, yet without the power of the imaginative, I think we would cease to exist.

I don’t need to hear a piece of music; I don’t need to have a painting on my wall; I don’t need to watch a play. I want those things: they move me and take me to places I did not know existed. They teach me about myself, yet they were created by people whom I have never met.

What power the artist has over us: she is the master of invention. I have been brought to tears by the truth in an author’s prose. The tune of a few strings on a guitar by a musician can elevate me to new heights. An artist’s painting can mark me forever.

This issue highlights art in its many forms. Art appeals to the aesthetics, so it’s no wonder that Key Biscayne is home to so many artists who draw their inspiration from the beauty they see around them. After all, art is everything.
