Tuesday February 13th, 7pm Village Council Meeting regarding the Sonesta

On February 13, the Key Biscayne Village Council will consider regulations for allowing hotel condominiums on our Island. We urge you to come and support the drafting of a responsible ordinance to incorporate hotel condominiums into the current zoning code. This is a vital step in returning a second hotel project to the Village.

The Sonesta has been a member of the Chamber since its inception and has continuously supported Chamber activity, both financially and through time and effort. Now, the Sonesta partnership needs the support of the Chamber and all of its members to encourage the Village Council to adopt appropriate legislation to make their hotel project feasible. Please join us in Council Chambers on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. to express your support.

At the last Village Council meeting the possibility of eliminating the hotel component entirely as part of the redevelopment of the Sonesta property and build all residential units was brought to the table by community groups and as an option by the developer. The Village's position is that our present zoning and concurrency rules do not allow for a condo hotel, the type of hotel proposed by the developer.

The redevelopment of the Sonesta site is a complex issue, and we suggest you read the local Key Biscayne papers, watch reruns of the council meeting on Channel 16, and/or talk to your elected representatives to get informed. There will be a Village Council meeting to discuss this issue on Tuesday, February 13th at 7pm in Village Hall. The Council has asked for feedback from the community.

Please tell us what you think about this issue.

  • Has the loss of a second hotel affected your business?
  • How?
  • Can we share your comments?
